A summer courtship: Sara and Ranjit

Sara and Ranjit on their wedding day in 1957

Courtesy of BBC Radio 4’s wonderful venture ‘The Listening Project’, we have been treated to an interview between Bloomsbury Reader author Sara Banerji, and her husband, Ranjit. They met in Oxford in the summer of 1956 when they were both 23, and moved to India the following year, where they lived happily for 17 years. Many of Sara’s novels are inspired by the landscape and experience of living in rural India.

Here they fondly remember their courtship and how they fell in love over a summer spent in Port Meadow in Oxford. But when Ranjit left for London, it seemed as if the relationship might be over before it could begin: A summer courtship: Sara and Ranjit
